SELECT A PHASE

Exploratory Phase

Couples Therapy

Our family therapists work with couples struggling with substance abuse, addiction (drug addiction and other) and recovery in their relationship.  We also help couples expand their view of problems to address other parts of their relationship without neglecting the pressing needs of addiction and recovery.

Exploring Sobriety Group

This weekly group offers clients a safe space to examine their relationship to substances and see what life might look like substance-free. This is an 8-week group and abstinence commitment.

Family Therapy

We have always treated addiction as a family issue and take a uniquely holistic approach, understanding individuals within the context of their family. We offer support to all family members and significant others throughout the recovery process.  Our clinical foundation integrates Relational Family Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an approach unique to Freedom Institute. Relational Family Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on relationships as the client (rather than the individual as the client).  By shifting the focus from blaming and reacting to individuals, we create more room for change and growth. Our primary family therapists have completed post-graduate studies at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. We offer family therapy, multi-family counseling and groups, and a range of services for others with a loved one struggling with issues across the addiction spectrum.  Our specialists work with you to identify family patterns that both evolve from and perpetuate substance abuse so those important relationships can be repaired. Our family therapists have substantial experience working with families confronting other major life stressors, including parenting issues, mental health challenges, trauma, divorce and loss. We help families identify and define current struggles as well as repair past hurts and hardships. We work with family members of all ages, from young children to elders, whether or not you have a family member in treatment with us.

Individual Therapy

After a comprehensive assessment, we match every client with a counselor best suited for success in his or her individual treatment. The Freedom Institute team is comprised of a range of addiction specialists. Our multidisciplinary team has been trained in a wide variety of innovative treatment modalities, including:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a therapeutic model heavily backed by scientific research and is central to most of our programming. DBT Skills Group focuses on the four skill modules of DBT - Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

  • Relational Family Therapy
Relational Family Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on relationships as the client (rather than the individual as the client).  By shifting the focus from blaming and reacting to individuals, we create more room for change and growth.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy (psychotherapy) method that rests on the idea that thoughts and perceptions influence behavior. CBT aims to help an individual identify harmful thoughts, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and, if they are not, works to view perceived negative situations more clearly and employ strategies to challenge and overcome them and respond in a more effective way.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a clinically proven set of tools to help maintain one's sense of calm, balance and well-being amid periods of high stress and anxiety.

  • Somatic Experiencing and EMDR
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is an approach to healing trauma and PTSD and  is based on the idea that traumatic experiences can lead to dysfunction in your nervous system, which can keep you from fully processing the experience. The goal of SE is to help you notice bodily sensations stemming from mental health issues and use this awareness to acknowledge and work through painful or distressing sensations. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy offers a comprehensive, structured approach to healing PTSD which involved processing traumatic memories and their associated beliefs, emotions, and sensations.

Early Recovery Phase I

Evening Outpatient Program (EOP)

At Freedom Institute, we offer customized programs so clients can enroll in a combination of groups to best fit their recovery needs.  FI’s Evening Outpatient Program (EOP) includes both process groups and groups that are based in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, all facilitated by Masters-level clinicians. Clients can package certain groups together to meet their treatment needs while accommodating their schedules. This allows clients to recover ‘in real life’ and receive the best possible care.

After a thorough evaluation, we will make recommendations based on clinical necessity as to which combination of groups may work best for our clients.  This will be done in consultation with any private practitioner who refers a client to us, as collaboration with our colleagues in the community is highly important to us. Clients who participate in groups may also receive individual therapy and/or case management.

Groups in EOP include:

  • Early Recovery Groups

  • DBT Skills Training

  • Individual Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Couples Therapy

  • Drug Testing

The IOP is our most involved treatment path, with three group sessions per week and weekly individual psychotherapy session for those who do not already have an individual therapist. The clinical foundation of our IOP is our unique integration of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Relational Family Therapy, which helps individuals and their families in the recovery process. Clients develop the skills needed for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Interventions

An intervention is a big step to take to help a loved one struggling with substance abuse and often a final attempt to restore their health.  At Freedom Institute, we create a supportive, caring environment to achieve the best possible outcome.  We treat the family holistically and are sensitive to the feelings and needs of each participant.

From initial assessment to coordinating the chosen treatment facility, we work closely with the family to handle all aspects of getting an individual the help he or she needs. Freedom Institute is dedicated to the most collaborative level of intervention possible.

While we primarily serve the greater New York area, we can travel to lead interventions elsewhere and also maintain an extensive nationwide referral network. Consultations are also available remotely via Telehealth. Please reach out to us if you need guidance and support to help someone you care about take the first step towards sobriety. Call 212-838-0044 or email us at info@freedominstitute.org. We will get back to you before the end of the following business day.

Mindfulness Meditation, Auricular Acupuncture, Yoga

As part of our Intensive Outpatient Program, we offer mindfulness meditation, auricular acupuncture, yoga, and art therapy to support holistic healing in clients’ recovery efforts. Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a clinically proven set of tools to help maintain one's sense of calm, balance and well-being amid periods of high stress and anxiety.

Multi-Family Group

Our short-term, multi-family groups are organized around presenting common problems or defining traits (e.g. adoption, divorce, loss/bereavement) for families that reach out to Freedom Institute for support and guidance. They are facilitated by a family therapist, combining didactic and supportive discussion elements to help families learn and grow from each other’s experiences while gaining support from the fellowship of shared struggles.

Parent Support Group

Being a parent of someone with substance abuse issues creates ongoing stress that impacts family relationships.  Even after a loved one gets sober, feelings and experiences from the past may be difficult to process and move beyond, not to mention worrying about relapse and rebuilding trust.  In this group, parents will support one another, explore effective problem-solving strategies that strengthen relationships and foster self-compassion regarding the challenges of parenting in the context of addiction.

Psychodrama

Our Psychodrama group is for individuals who have a solid base in recovery and are committed to long-term sobriety.  Open to a maximum of eight (8) people, the group allows clients in a safe and supportive environment to explore the many roles in their personal and professional lives and find new and creative ways of handling situations.

Psychodrama helps clients look at the past and present, set future goals, and build empathy for themselves and others, which is a key ingredient to recovery.  This group incorporates elements of DBT, mindfulness, and the 12 Steps.

Relapse Prevention Group

Advanced Relapse Prevention Group is for adults with a minimum of 90 days of continuous sobriety. ARP offers strategies to address issues that can pose a threat to sobriety this phase such as finances, relationships, family issues, career matters and spirituality.  The Masters-level clinicians who facilitate this group employ a variety of clinical techniques including psychotherapy process, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Experiential Therapies. This group takes place weekly and is a minimum 6-month commitment.

Significant Others Group

This group is for spouses and partners (current or former) of those struggling with substance abuse (active, in recovery, in treatment, etc.).  This space provides a safe place to discuss how addiction has affected your relationships as well as how it has impacted other relationships in your life.  The group offers community and connection by sharing and learning with others who have experienced similar situations. The discussions offer an opportunity for growth, learning from life events that could easily feel like life struggles and losses, but often are building blocks for improved and fulfilling relationships.

Telehealth Services

All Freedom Institute services, from an initial assessment to individual and group sessions and our Intensive Outpatient Program, are available through remote session with our clinical staff via FI Telehealth. Please call us at (212) 838-0044.

Trauma Treatment

Many people struggling with alcoholism and addiction often have underlying trauma. We have highly trained and experienced clinicians who are certified in Somatic Experiencing (SE) and Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Clients undertake EMDR or SE as a component of their treatment program.

Emotional Recovery in Sobriety is an aftercare psychotherapy group where adults with a year or more of sober time explore the next steps in sobriety and recovery after stabilization.  The group addresses ways to cope with relationship issues; interpersonal communication, cope with daily life stresses , family concerns, and emotional regulation.  Group members must be abstinent and have a strong foundation of recovery.  Currently, the group is made up of clients who have 1-6 years in recovery.  The group meets every Tuesday evening from 6:00pm - 7:30pm.

Prior to entering the group potential members meet for a pre group initial consultation.  Members are to make a 6-month commitment to group. In addition, clients can continue weekly individual therapy and case management.

  • Early Recovery Group

  • DBT Skills Training

  • Individual Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Couples Therapy

  • Drug Testing: For clients participating in our Early Recovery Phase I and Sustaining Recovery Phase II programming, Freedom Institute recommends, and often requires, random drug testing as it supports our clients in their recovery efforts and in relapse prevention. Drug testing is available on site at Freedom Institute or remotely through True Mobile Health. Click these links for True Mobile Health’s Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.

Exploring Sobriety Group

This weekly group offers clients a safe space to examine their relationship to substances and see what life might look like substance-free. This is an 8-week group and abstinence commitment.

Family DBT Skills Group

DBT is a therapeutic model heavily backed by scientific research and is central to all of our programming. It teaches skills such as Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. It also teaches self-awareness and relational skills in the context of family and interpersonal relationships.

In Freedom Institute's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Family Skills Group participants will learn DBT Skills and begin to rebuild relational strength and compassion and learn how DBT can help everyone participate in recovery.

We work with family members of all ages, from young children to elders, whether or not you have a loved one in treatment with us.

Gambling

When dealing with gambling issues, FI offers individual counseling, using a combination of methods including DBT, CBT, motivational interviewing and action methods to help problem gamblers. We also facilitate outside resources such as legal referrals as needed.

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Integrated DBT Practice Group

Advanced DBT Practice Group is for clients who have successfully completed either IOP or the DBT Skills Training group. This group provides clients the opportunity to apply DBT Skills to real-life circumstances they face in their first year of recovery and actively practice their skills in the context of a supportive group environment.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our renowned, flagship program, Freedom Institute's IOP can be the next phase of treatment for clients who have completed inpatient treatment or the first step in recovery for clients who are unable to do inpatient.

IOP groups and services may include:

  • DBT Skills Training

  • Process Group

  • DBT Skills in Action

  • Multi-Family Group

  • Individual Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Couples Therapy

  • Phone Coaching

  • Psychoeducation
