Connection is Essential in Recovery
Alcoholism, addiction, substance use disorders…whatever name you call it, it is a disease of isolation. At Freedom Institute, we talk a lot about connection, reaching out when you need help, when you are struggling to achieve or maintain sobriety. Connection is the best prevention and the power of knowing you are not alone in your struggle against substances should not be ignored.
This is the message of The Year of the Dog, an engaging film opening at Village East Angelika this Friday, March 10, 2023. The film follows the story of Matt, an alcoholic in his mid-30’s, who’s made a mess out of his life and personal relationships. The film poignantly chronicles Matt’s struggle with sobriety as he works to honor his mother’s dying wish—to see her son sober. Along the way, Matt meets a stray husky and makes an unlikely connection, discovering that he may not be as alone as he once thought.
Writer/Director Rob Grabow says, “This is more than just a great dog film; it’s about repair and connection and the fact that it’s never too late to rebuild damaged relationships. Sometimes the path forward through any type of suffering can be as simple, or as challenging, as finding something or someone to connect with."
The Year of the Dog is a captivating film, well-acted with a seasoned (and recognizable) cast, great music and of course a lot of awesome dog moments.
The film opens in New York City this Friday, March 10 through March 16 at the Village East Angelika. Friday and Saturday nights include a Q&A with the writer/director after the 7:00 pm show.
